Shipping & Return Policies

Most items featured in our on-line catalog are carried in-stock at our store in Asheville, North Carolina, and are shipped within 48 hours.  We’ll notify you of any exceptions. Our standard method of contacting you is by email.  To avoid delays, please make sure to provide a valid email address and check your email during the first 24 hours after placing an order, in case we contact you with questions.  By providing your e-mail address, you will receive tracking information to monitor your order’s progress once it has shipped.  We do not ship outside the United States. Please note: No refunds will be given for any orders that are shipped and indicated by our shipper (USPS or UPS) as “delivered.” We will do our best to help resolve the issue!

HOW TO ORDER:  Online, by phone (1-800-678-5430), or by mail.  Please note that we no longer accept orders by FAX.  You may email orders to, but for security please call us and provide your credit card number by phone and not by email.

*Some larger orders or orders that include heavier items may require an additional shipping surcharge. Shipping to Alaska and Hawaii will differ.  We will email you if your shipping charges differ.  Please call or email for a quote if you need expedited shipping such as Next Day, or Second Day Air.  We are happy to help!

INSTITUTIONAL ORDERS:   We do accept purchase orders from educational institutions.  Please email purchase order documents as an attachment to: .  We require an official purchase order form from your institution, including billing and shipping information.  You may also send PO’s by snail mail. Sorry, we no longer accept documents by FAX.  If you have a question about ordering by purchase order, please do not hesitate to contact us.  You may also order using the shopping cart system in our website using a credit card. However, large orders will require us to send you a quote for shipping cost based on your order.  Payments on purchase orders are due no later than 30 days after invoice.  Some large orders may require prepayment instead of billing.

Shipping Information

The following charge is for a single U.S. ground shipment for a single address via UPS Ground or Priority Mail (U.S. Postal Service) to an address in the contiguous 48 US States.  If you require expedited shipping, please call us at 1-800-678-5430.   **UPS Shipments require a physical address.  Orders will be shipped by either UPS or USPS at our discretion. Please Note: All orders over $50 in value will require a signature for delivery. Also note that orders being shipped to addresses other than the credit card billing address may experience delays due to our anti-fraud procedures.

We shop around to find the best shipping rates possible in order to keep our costs down and pass the savings on to you.  We will reduce your shipping charge if possible.

Satisfaction is guaranteed!  If you are not compleatly satisfied with the merchandise you ordered, just return it (via FEDEX, UPS or insured parcel post, or in person in the store) within 30 days of purchase, and we will give you a refund or store credit.  Please note that we have a separate return policy for astronomical telescopes (see below).  Items must be in new condition, in original un-opened product packaging, and with all paperwork. Shipping charges are not refundable.  This policy applies to both in-store and website sales.

Telescope Return Policy

We urge you to give serious consideration to the purchase of any telescope, and we are here to help you make an informed decision. We offer our knowledge and expertise to help you select the most appropriate telescope for your situation. We will also help you, after your purchase from our store, should you require assistance with the operation of your telescope.

Our telescope prices here at The Compleat Naturalist are comparable to the lowest prices that we have found on the internet. Because our profit margin on astronomical telescopes is so low, and because it is very difficult to re-sell telescopes as new that have been un-boxed and then returned by the customer, we must have a very strict return policy for telescope sales. In return, we offer you our knowledge and our pledge of friendly, informed service.

In the case of defective telescopes, Celestron has a two-year limited warranty, and will repair or replace any defective parts. Each telescope has full warranty information included in the box. You will need to communicate directly with the manufacturer to handle warranty claims or repair issues. In some cases we might have replacement parts or telescopes in stock that we can exchange for defective (under warranty) merchandise, so you are welcome to contact us first.  This applies only to scopes and accessories that were purchased from us, so please keep your store receipt.

Telescope Return Policy:  Telescopes may be returned for store credit only, and must be unused and unopened, within 30 days of purchase, and must be accompanied by an original store receipt.  All telescope purchases will be assessed a 10% restocking charge if returned.  There will be no exceptions to this policy.

Special Order Items:  Special order items are items that are not normally stocked in our store.  Special orders are non-refundable.  We require full prepayment on special order telescopes and accessories.  At the time of your order we will confirm with you the above policy and whether you wish to proceed with the order.  On some large orders, your signature will be required confirming that you acknowledge that the order is non-refundable.
